I have purchased all of the Todd's Rutledge and Crawford series plus their charming "Walnut Tree", AND re-read them all several times, so I am particularly disappointed with "A Forgotten Place". I am sure the Todds are pressed by their publisher to produce a next book in these series, but it would be better for their readers to wait than to present them with such a feeble story. I hope first-time Todd readers will not judge the Todd's body of work by this example. "A Forgotten Place" moves Sister Crawford from concerned nurse to foolish busy-body, though in having to deal with such a cast of paper characters might drive anyone to strange behavior. By the time the story plods to its conclusion the reader has reached a point of "Who cares, just get it over-with!"
As with the authors’ last 4 Crawford and Rutledge books, this book was a boring, circular narrative with no, and I mean NO descriptive details and meaningful character development. The plot was silly and ending predictable. This was a lazy, unskilled effort and I shall never be duped into buying another! As a point of reference, read “the mind readers†or “beckoning lady†by allingham, the books I finished before dragging through this novel. I should add that I own every one of the authors’ books and have been increasingly dismayed by their slap-dash products. Unfortunately there’s no refund for crummy books.
Disappointed though the story was interesting felt it became very repetitive and could have been half the size ,i lost interest in it half way through,,the time In France was interesting description of the men and their injuries what made me give it the 3 stars i ,
I look forward to reading about Bess and her adventures as a very brave member of the nursing forces during WWI, and rather intrepid mystery-solver. I've read all the books but I must confess to being rather disappointed in this book -- it seemed to be a rushed plot, almost as if the authors felt pressured into getting something to press because of publishing pressures, and the plot did suffer for it in places.However, on the plus side, there were several things that were truly excellent. First is bringing attention to the post war problems of the sick, maimed, shell-shocked, and devastated lives of returning Doughboys. How we treat our veterans of wars is a sign of our civilization, and we still haven't learned our lessons of caring for them after they've kept us free. Another good part of this book was a lot of suspense and the mystery of the goings-on in this remote and extremely insular village was very creepy. I've read about similar villages and people banding together to hide a truth or refuse to accept something unpalatable, and it's always frightening how a disturbance can turn to mob rule. Another plus is, of course, getting to know Bess and, to a much lesser extent, the marvelous Simon better, who is a very evolved sort of man for his era, giving Bess props for being strong, capable, and brave, and not requiring a knight on a steed to rescue her.::SPOILER ALERT:: read at your peril!********************************************I am really disappointed that their relationship seems to be stagnating. Was this the fault of getting a book to press without considering their feelings? Sure, it does create tension between the two and for the reader over a series of books, but it also loses a faithful readership who either wait for something between the two or else want them to end it and let each person get on with their lives. Or perhaps this delaying it to advance the story through Simon's secrets that seems to put the skids on their relationship. Either way, something has to be resolved, either by setting the characters free or letting them truly find each other on another level. It won't end the series to do so, believe me, only enrich it in a rewarding way!
While not as awful as some reviewers wrote, this is the least compelling of the Bess Crawford mysteries. The publisher needs to employ an editor with some experience. Having been a writer for many years, I may have been more distracted by the grammar issues than many other readers, but I bet others readers are bothered also. Writers cannot edit their own books. They need an editor to do so. Two of the characters were interesting and well-defined, and thankfully, there was actually an ending to this book. But the townspeople were amorphous and never connected with me.As I mentioned, I appreciated a real ending, although how Hugh finally saw the light would have been a nice inclusion. Overall, this book was not awful, and in fact, it was better than average. But the author(s) can do better. As an example, giving the bad guy and a good guy the same first name was pointless and did nothing to advance the plot. But in spite of some complaints, a major strength of this book is reminding us that wars do not end just because the guns quit firing. And for goodness sake—give Bess and Simon what the fans want.
